How Secure Is Access Control With A Fob?
How Secure Is Access Control With A Fob?
How secure is the access to your business? What exactly happens when a fob is used? Is there technology that can duplicate the capability of a fob to your access control system? Why use a locksmith company for your access control solution? To understand the answers to these questions, let’s take a look at how an access control system and a fob works.
How A Fob Works
A fob is simply a divice with an RFID chip inside. It functions by communicating with a RFID reader. This wireless technology means that a digital signal is being transmitted between a fob and the reader. You add the fobs credential to your access control system when you want to give it to a person to access the building such as a new employee, you can then give permissions in your system for that fob to access any door that you wish to access and not to those you dont want the holder of that fob to access thus controling access to your building and the different parts of that building your want to secure.
Hacking A Fob
It is possible to capture the RFID signal with the right technology in order to clone a duplicate device. However there are several tricks to the trade that make duplicating a fob useless unless you know certain information about the system such as facility codes etc. You can upgrade your fobs and reader to an encrypted system which can be quite expensive but if security to a facility is a big concern then you would have to make that calculation. Another way is to use a system with two factor authentication, this means that you will not only present your fob at the reader but will also be required to enter a pin code as well. This means that even if the fob is lost or duplicated no one can access your property without the pin code as well.
What To Do In Case Of A Lost Fob?
Should one of your employees lose a fob then you can easily remove that fob from accessing your facility and issue a new one to that employee. This is so much easier than an employee losing a key. When a key is lost or stolen you may want to consider changing the locks on all your doors which can be costly if done regularly, with a lost fob situation the only cost is the fob.
